Welcome to the High Definition LCD Televisions page, high definition (HD) is a standard that states that a television can display very high resolution pictures. HD is the future of broadcasting and soon all digital television, DVD's and video games will be made in HD so you will need an HD television to view this material in high definition.
So if you are planning on buying an LCD television then it is very wise to buy an HD LCD television as it will offer the quality that you need to watch high definition content. HD LCD televisions are also not much more expensive than the old standard definition LCD televisions and there are some very cheap deals to be found if you shop around.
| It is easy to tell if an LCD television can display high definition imagery as they are labeled as HD Ready and have the logo on the right. Most shops will also make it very clear if an LCD television is HD ready as it is a big selling point as HD ready LCD televisions are so much better than the old style LCD televisions. | ![]() |
HD ready televisions are capable of displaying two resolutions which are 720p and 1080i. The number stands for the number of vertical lines that are used to make up the picture and as with any resolution the higher the number the more detail the picture will have and the better quality it will be. The letter represents how the lines of the picture are delivered onto the screen, with interlaced (i) only half of the lines are delivered in each pass so on one pass it will deliver lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc and then on the next pass it will show lines 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and so on. Each pass happens so quickly that you cannot see that this is being done, with progressive scanning (p) the lines are all delivered in the same pass though which gives a smoother image and is especially noticeable with fast moving images such as sports.
So both 720p and 1080i have their advantages; 1080i has more detail and so will look a little better with highly detailed pictures such as top movies and documentaries but 720p is still very detailed and has a smoother image. Digital television programmers, DVD's and video games can be produced in either resolution so luckily HD ready televisions will automatically switch to the correct resolution so there is no need to be constantly changing the resolution of your HD ready LCD television.
All HD ready LCD televisions also have to have an HDMI socket (or DVI in some cases) which is a digital connection. This means that there is no loss of quality from your digital source such as your DVD player or digital television tuner, although the old DVD players and digital television are digital they still convert the signal into analogue so that it can be displayed on the old standard definition televisions so there is some loss in quality.
To view HD content on your new HD ready LCD television the DVD player, digital television tuner or video games console will have to be able to produce the HD standard so your HD ready television will not show everything in HD as the original source has to be of an HD quality. Some DVD players can up-scale into HD quality but this is not the same as a true HD DVD player so to get true HD quality with your new HD ready LCD television you are going to need true HD sources such as HD digital television, an HD DVD player or an HD video games console such as the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.
