Welcome to the LCD Televisions page, LCD televisions are great flat screen televisions and are very similar to plasma screens in appearance, LCD televisions are generally smaller though so LCD televisions are better if you are looking for a small or mid-sized flat screen television. There are some very large LCD televisions but plasma screens are generally of a better quality and value when you go over 32 inches so 32 inches is the largest LCD television that we would recommend.
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display and it is used in all kinds of electronic equipment, as well as televisions and monitors LCD is used in calculators, microwaves, watches, digital clocks, digital cameras, camcorders, hand held games consoles and many others. LCD televisions use the twisted nematic liquid crystal which has a twisted crystalline structure, it is used because it reacts to electrical currents in a very predictable way and will therefore twist to an exact position if the correct electrical current is used. The term liquid is used because of the twisted nematic liquid crystal's ability to move and does not actually contain any liquid.
LCD televisions work by blocking light, there use twisted nematic liquid crystals between two perpendicularly aligned panes of polarized glass and by altering the state of the liquid crystals it is possible to alter the light that is being emitted from those crystals. Each crystal has a red, green and blue sub-crystal which allows any colour to be shown from the crystal which is how LCD televisions produce colour displays.
There are many advantages of buying an LCD television over the old CRT televisions, they are however very similar to plasma televisions but there are still reasons as to why you would choose an LCD television over a plasma screen. Both plasma and LCD televisions are both flat screen televisions and are very thin and sleek, they also have a high resolution, wide viewing angle and much larger screens than the old CRT televisions which were small, bulky and ugly.
The main reason for buying an LCD television over a plasma screen is a matter of screen size, the LCD televisions are available in small, medium and large screen sizes whereas plasma screens are generally only available in large screen sizes. So if you are wanting a small flat screen television in the range of 15-24 inches or a medium sized flat screen television in the range of 24-32 inches then an LCD television is the only choice if you want to buy a flat screen television, plasma televisions are a better choice when you go over 32 inches though as they offer a better quality and value at that size.
The resolution of an LCD television is one of the most important things to look for, the resolution states how many crystals (pixels) are used to make up the picture on the television. The more pixels that are used the more detail the picture will have, you may have seen photos that are blocky and this is because the camera did not have enough pixels to capture the picture accurately and the same applies to LCD televisions although on a much higher scale. A high resolution LCD television will produce stunningly detailed pictures that take the breath away and the cheap LCD televisions that have a low resolution will produce a very poor quality picture in comparison so it is well worth checking the resolution before you buy. The resolution is stated like 1366x768 and shows the horizontal and then vertical pixels that are used to make up the picture and the higher the numbers are the more pixels that are used.
| There is a standard which makes checking the resolution of an LCD much easier though and this is called High Definition (HD), if an LCD television is labeled as HD then it will have a very high resolution so this makes it easy to buy a high resolution LCD television: just buy a HD LCD television! HD is a broadcasting standard that is of a much higher quality than the old broadcasts and soon all digital television, DVD and video games will be made in HD so you will need an HD television to view this HD quality. So basically if you are buying an LCD television it is very wise to buy an HD model, it will have a very high resolution and you will be able to enjoy HD broadcasts as soon as they are available in your area. | ![]() |
There are also other aspects of the LCD television that affect the quality of the picture and they include the contrast ratio. This states the range of contrast from the darkest black to the lightest white that the LCD television can display and is stated like 800:1, the higher the contrast ratio the better as it will have a greater range of contrast and therefore show deeper blacks and brighter whites. The actual brightness of the LCD television is also often shown and is also important, that is stated like 500cd/m2 with more brightness being better as it gives a more vivid picture.
There are a few other things that are also worth looking at when you buy an LCD television, the dot pitch refers to the distance between the pixels of the television and a smaller distance produces a sharper image so the smaller the dot pitch the better. The response time refers to the amount of time that it takes a pixel to change it's colour and faster response times also produce a smoother image so it is also worth looking for fast response times.
