Plasma televisions work by using thousands of sealed, low pressure glass chambers which are filled with a combination of neon and xenon which makes the plasma. There are coloured phosphors behind these chambers (one green, one blue and one red) and when the chambers are energized they produce UV light which reacts with the red, blue and green coloured phosphors to produce the colour required from that chamber (or pixel).

But why is a plasma television better than an LCD television? Well there are many reasons that you would choose a plasma screen over an LCD screen and the first is the screen size. Plasma screens are larger and so screens of the same size are often cheaper than the equivalent LCD televisions and there are large screen sizes which are simply not available in LCD (generally over 46 inches). Many people are also of the opinion that plasma televisions have a better and smoother picture quality but this will depend on the resolution of the plasma screen.

The resolution is very important with plasma televisions as this is what dictates how detailed the picture is and therefore how good the quality of the picture is. The resolution is stated in he number of horizontal and vertical pixels that the television used to make up the picture and the more pixels it has the more detailed the picture will be so look out for a plasma television with a high resolution if you want a very high on screen quality.

This has been made much easier though by the advent of High Definition (HD), HD is a standard that states that a television has a very high resolution and so all you have to do is look for the HD symbol when you buy a new plasma television and you are assured of a very high picture quality. HD is also being adopted by most digital television providers, DVD producers and video game manufacturers so to enjoy all of this content in HD you will need an HD television, this HD content is of a much higher quality than the old digital television, DVD and video game standard so is well worth having when you buy a new television.

Another feature that is well worth looking for when you buy a plasma television is a Freeview tuner, a Freeview digital tuner gives you access to free digital television which is a major bonus. It is better to have the Freeview tuner built into the plasma television as it makes it so much easier to use; there is only one remote control and less equipment is needed. There is also much less setting up to be done if the Freeview tuner is built into the television and they often have auto-setup so there is often very little work to be done at all. You really do want digital television too if you are buying a large screen plasma television as standard television would simply not do it justice and this is especially true if you are buying an HD plasma television (although bear in mind that you need HD digital television to get the true HD quality).

There are also other aspects of the plasma television's specification that affect the quality of the picture on the screen and these include the contrast ratio which states the television's ability to deal with light and dark shades. The higher the contrast ratio the better the television will be able to deal dark blacks and bright whites. The brightness of the screen is also important but less so than the resolution and the contrast ratio, a screen with a high brightness will perform better in well lit rooms but most plasma screens will perform well in these conditions as they have flat screens and so do not reflect much light.
